What are we thinking?

The body language and some of the initial reaction from folks when we first share our intentions to adopt Steven are clearly…”What are you thinking…isn’t five of your own more than enough?”  Well, all we can say is when your life has been blessed as we have been, to keep it to ourselves would fall right in line with the culture around us but it’s not what God has called us to…we are not called to the American Dream of working 40 years climbing the corporate ladder and making lots of money and then retiring to the golf course.  We have no intention of retiring until God calls us home…when you look at life that way, then it’s hard to worry about the potential we are taking on with this and future adoptions…potential that we will be full-time caretakers for the rest of our lives.  Before we started this journey, we sat and prayed with our children and explained that God can use us to save these children from a terrible life in orphanages without love and we can give eternal life by introducing them to a Savior.  This is counter to the selfish culture we live in today but after all, it’s how we are called to live…

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

James 1:27
